We are saddened to announce POKO, Oscars right-paw man, had to be put to sleep today, April 25th, at 6:21 pm due to neurological problems. Poko was very loved and will be very missed. Please donate to your local Animal Shelter or Dachshund rescue in his memory.

Tonight at 6:21 pm, our dog POKO said goodbye to us. We had to have him put down due to neurological complications. The vet did everything possible but there was nothing to be done that wouldn't have been unreasonable and possibly give Poko a life of pain or paralysis.

Poko was adopted off of Craigs List. The family of the owner said they had to give him away because the owner was afraid he would hurt Poko by tripping over him, since the owner was up in years. At first Oscar was quite jealous and wanted to make sure that Poko knew who was top dog. But a year and a couple of fights with minor injuries later and they were fast friends. They became brothers. Poko took his duty as protector of the house quite seriously. We had to make a spot for him to see out of the front windows and he always alerted us whenever someone was out front. With Oscars' guidance, Poko became a formidable squirreler. He could hunt them down, and sniff their trails.

While not the cuddler per se, Poko showed his affection by licking. Someone once remarked that we should've named him Jim Beam because "he's a licker". The pun fit! Poko was very smart. He understood a lot of things, could follow commands and was an excellent leash walker and car rider. Not one much for clothing, he loved to wear hats. Today Poko left us all and there's a big whole where this very sweet, handsome boy once lived in our home. He won't be there to jump enthusiastically and run in circles when we come in. He won't be there to play in the yard and wrestle with Oscar. And he won't be there to cuddle with his brother on the couch or bed.

He also won't be there to join in singing with his brother, Oscar. I've always had a silly song for every dog I have ever owned. Poko was George's dog. So I made up the ditty to include his daddy:

POKO AL POKO
YOU SILLY LITTLE BOY!
POKO AL POKO
YOU ARE YOUR DADDY'S PRIDE AND JOY AND
POKO AL POKO
YOU LOVE TO SING AND PLAY!
YOU CHASE THEM SQUIRRELS
RIGHT OUT OF OUR WORLD
AND YOU DO IT EVERY DAY!

Goodbye, faithful friend, our tweenie weenie.
